HP EliteBook 8470p Upgrade

The HP EliteBook 8470p reminds me of the Dell Latitude in a way because of its accessibility to the components by removing a single screw and panel on the bottom of the notebook computer. However, there is at least one component that I saw that I didn't have access to. I think it's the chipset controller. Other than that, my least favorite part of ALL HP EliteBook notebook computers I have used to today is the touchpad. It's way to slick, it has NO tactile feel and it's just feels creepy.

The hard drive bay is located on the lower left hand side of the notebook underneath what I think is the bluetooth adapter. I've already replaced the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB with an Intel 160GB SSD. It's lightning fast!


The Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 is a half height miniPCIe card, and there is space for another full height miniPCIe card. I'm guessing it's supposed to be the WWAN card as the antennas are already installed for the card.




Here's a picture of the inaccessible component. You can see the red epoxy around the chip. I'm guess it's the chipset controller. Right over it is the LSI HDA Modem.



Next up the CPU and heatsink and fan assembly. In the HP EliteBook 8470p, the fan and heatsink assembly are separate units. First remove the fan, then the heatsink. I've gotta say, the heatpipe is very short, but it seems to do the job. The 8470p stays nice and cool.



Intel Core i5 3320M


The heatfins were a little dusty when I pulled out the heatsink. Using a can of air, I cleaned out the small amount of collected dust.



I wanted to the replace the optical (CD/DVD-RW) drive with a 2nd HDD caddy, but the front bezel is custom. However, upon removal of the front bezel I found that it's STANDARD! Well standard is a non-existent word for bezels, but generally speaking, there are some commonalities. I used the iSesamo pry tool to help remove the bezel from the original optical drive.


Note, there are 4 clips on the bezel that attach it to the drive. The smaller clip next to the horizontal clip is the piece that secures it to the 2nd HDD caddy, so it'll be tough to remove. Essentially, I ended up FULLY disassembling the 2nd HDD caddy to remove it last time, but noticed a firm pull dislodged it, but it's scary because that clip is so narrow and small.



For anyone that's installed a typical 2nd HDD caddy, they generally come with the flat bezel.

  1. As for upgrading the CPU: if the i7-3840QM works, as well as the i7-3630QM, both according to compatibility list, would also the i7-3632QM do? This has less TDP, so less heat inside the laptop case. Are there any more differences between 3630 and 3632 besides the TDP that would prevent this to work?

Sorry for the late reply, but looking at the specs for both the 3630 (http://ark.intel.com/products/71459/Intel-Core-i7-3630QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_40-GHz) and the 3632 (http://ark.intel.com/products/71458/Intel-Core-i7-3632QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz-rPGA), I'm not seeing a whole lot of difference other than the clock rate 3.40GHz vs 3.20GHz.

      I checked up on the cpu-world.com: 3630 (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7-3630QM%20Mobile%20processor.html) vs 3632 (http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7-3632QM%20(PGA)%20Mobile%20processor.html). Here I see the following differences:
      The 3632 has
      Level 1 cache size :
      - 4 x 32 KB 8-way set associative instruction caches
      - 4 x 32 KB 8-way set associative data caches
      Level 2 cache size : 4 x 256 KB 8-way set associative caches
      Level 3 cache size : 6 MB 12-way set associative shared cache

    1. Physically changing out the GPU is not possible. However, there are multiple configurations for the motherboard, so assuming you have a motherboard without the discrete video card, you can get the version WITH the discrete video card.

      It looks like for the 8470p, HP supported up to a 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3720QM (2.60 GHz, 6MB L3 cache, 45 W, 4 cores) and AMD Radeon HD 7570M, with 1GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory.

      I check on Ebay and there are for sure 2 models of motherboards floating around out there.   5. Even though this is an old post - the i7 3840 draws 45Watts,not 35 watts of power at 2.8GHz, not 3.8GHz. If the Infos to other CPUs are right can be doubted. Then a short heatpipe is better than a long one! You want to get a lot of heat to the heat spreading end of it. There were some more Infos that made me headache but on the other hand it's cool that you do want you seem to like. But a little more investigation would be great to catch even those who are not absolutely beginners in computer-technics

  6. Ram: 8Go by slot maximum --> maximum for the 8470p mainboard = 16Go
    No pb for double ssd
    I confirm i5 3320 -->35w and i7 3840 -->45w

    I have a 8770w (w for workstation. 7 for 17.3" screen) with 32Go ram (= maximum: there are 4 slots @8Go each), 3 ssds + 1 msata, discrete GPU (nvidia quadro K3000M), CPU: i5 3840QM --> the fan is always on and there is a lot of heat coming from it.
    The charger power is 200w

    In addition, I've just bought a 8470p (14" instead of 17.3").
    I will upgrade it to 2x8Go (it is now at 2Go)
    GPU within the CPU
    CPU: i5 3320M
    Original charger power is 65w --> upgrated to 90W

    Voila...
